Introduction
When you get infected with the Covid-19 virus, your body – like with all viral infections – will produce antibodies to make the virus harmless. You will produce both acute antibodies (IgA and IgM) that fight directly against the virus, as well as more chronic antibodies (IgG). These IgG antibodies (possibly) make you temporarily immune to a subsequent attack of the same virus. To find out if you have previously been infected with the Covid-19 virus, you can test whether or not these antibodies are present in your blood.
About the Elecsys Anti-SARS-CoV-2 Serological Test
Elecsys® Anti-SARS-CoV-2 is the latest development for the detection of antibodies (including IgG) against the Coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) in human serum and plasma. Using a blood sample, the test can detect antibodies to the new coronavirus that causes COVID-19, which would indicate whether a person is already infected and may have developed immunity to the virus.
The high sensitivity and specificity of the test are crucial to reliably determine whether a person has been exposed to the virus and whether the patient has developed antibodies. The values of 100% and 99,81% indicate that the chance of a false-negative or false-positive result is extremely small.
Because the antibodies are produced within a few days after the first symptoms appear, we adhere to the 14-day limit before the test can be taken in order to guarantee the reliability of the test results.
The test process
Homed-IQ uses a finger prick test that will be delivered to your doorstep. After you have collected the sample, you will send the materials to one of our certified partner laboratories. As soon as the test results are available they will be assessed by a doctor and shared with you. All of our tests are CE certified laboratory tests and are absolutely not ‘rapid tests’!
An infection with the COVID-19 virus can go without symptoms in a large part of the population. About 80% have mild to moderate symptoms, 14% have serious symptoms and less than 6% are showing very serious symptoms.
The following symptoms are reported in varying degrees:
- Coughing
- Dry cough
- Cough with mucus
- Fever
- Cold and sneezing
- Shortness of breath
- Sore throat / lung pain
- Muscle and joint pain
- Loss of smell or taste
- Diarrhoea
- Nausea and vomiting
- Headache
- Fatigue
About the Test results
- A COI value of <1.0 means that your test result is NEGATIVE and that you have not produced antibodies against the coronavirus.
- A COI value of > 1.0 indicates that your test result is POSITIVE and that your body has produced antibodies against the coronavirus. The higher the value, the higher the number of antibodies. In some circumstances, the COI value can get close to 200.
What about immunity?
At this point, we don’t know if someone who has had Covid-19 will have long-term protection against a new coronavirus infection. That is why everyone must continue to follow the preventive measures. Using a blood sample, the test can detect antibodies to the new coronavirus that causes COVID-19, which would indicate whether a person has already been infected and may have developed immunity to the virus. Based on the measurement of a total of 5272 samples, the Elecsys® Anti-SARS-CoV-2 assay has a specificity of 99.81% and shows no cross-reactivity with the four human coronaviruses causing colds. This means that it greatly reduces the chance of false positives. Elecsys® Anti-SARS-CoV-2 detects antibodies with 100% sensitivity in samples taken 14 days after a PCR-confirmed infection. The importance of specificity and sensitivity of a particular test depends on the purpose and prevalence of diseases within a given population.

Frequently Asked Questions
‘Coronavirus Disease 2019’ (also known as COVID-19 or coronavirus) is a respiratory disease caused by the ‘SARS-CoV2’ virus. It was discovered in Wuhan, China in early 2020, and has since spread worldwide. Causing a global pandemic that has been declared a public health emergency.
COVID-19 easily spreads from person to person. How it works; when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or exhales, tiny particles move through the air. When other people inhale these droplets they can get infected. Or by touching their eyes, nose, or mouth after having touched an object or surface that contain these droplets.
Most people have mild symptoms. Severe cases are more common in older adults (over 60 years of age), as well as in pregnant women, those with weakened immune systems, and those with underlying health problems. However, serious symptoms may also appear in younger adults and in rare cases even in children.
At present, there is no vaccine or antiviral medication available.
We recommend this test for anyone who is 18 or above and who would like to know if they have been exposed to the coronavirus and want to learn if they have developed antibodies to possibly protect them against future COVID-19 infections.
- For anyone under the age of 18.
- For people CURRENTLY experiencing severe coronavirus symptoms. In that case, we recommend that you seek immediate medical attention.
